Work on cause-effect with grade level literature. Common Core requirements include an effort to use grade level material with special education students. Finding materials adapted to students’ skill levels can be challenging. Here is a resource for teaching one of the Greek Myths to special ed students.

The story of King Midas is one of the best known stories of Greek mythology. It is a good example for teaching cause-effect, and a good starting point for teaching Greek mythology to special education students.

I have used D’Aulaires’ Book of Greek Myths as my reference, as this is the book I see used most by schools.

This resource includes materials for describing characters (King Midas), illustrating cause and effect (throughout the story) and for sequencing and re-telling the story.

There is also a picture communication board for students who need to use one.

You will find that for some activities there is a color version (for the teacher to use while teaching) and a b/w line-art version for students to use if you prefer not to/cannot make color copies. The Smarty Symbols can be copied on a black copier, and will show shades of grey that most students* can discriminate.

*You may need color for students with cortical vision impairment and other vision issues; although some of them work well with dark greyscale
