If you are looking for fun, engaging sight word games and activities that are themed for your students to work on during small group or independent work, then these back to school sight word games are just for you!

Working with another word list? No problem! Just create your own cards with the template included.

How many games are there?

There are directions included for four back to school card games. You may be able to use the cards for other games in your classroom as well.

Can you tell me more about the games?

All the sight word games can be played with any number of word cards. You may choose to stick to one word list or combine them to give your students more of a challenge. Directions for each game and special cards are included in your download.

Sight Word Memory: this game is played like any other memory or concentration game where students are trying to find the most word pairs

Make a Match: this is a variation of “Go Fish,” where students ask each other for a specific sight word to find the most word pairs.

Sight Word Shakeup: similar to “Boom!” students will practice reading words from the deck of cards; if they draw a “shakeup” card, they must return their cards to the pile.

Sight Word Pencil: this game is like “Old Maid,” where students create pairs and avoid the “Broken Pencil” card; students try not to be the last player holding the Broken Pencil card

What words are included?

I don’t want to use all the words. How can I differentiate between the word lists?

Each word list features a different school supply on the card. For example, the pre-primer word list has cards with crayons, whereas the third grade word list has notebook paper. Feel free to mix and match the cards to meet your student’s needs.

I want to mix the word lists together, but I don’t want to print all 220 cards. Can I make my own cards?

Yes, you can use your own word list to create 40 school supply cards at a time. If you need more than 40 cards, you can repeat the process laid out in the file.

Can I print the games in black and white?

A blackline version of the games is not included at this time but may be added in the future. Please let me know through my store’s Q & A tab if you want to see that added to this resource.

Do you have more sight word resources in your store?
Yes, you can find more sight word activities in the sight words category of my store.
