This engaging flap book writing project is unique in that it can be differentiated in so many ways! It includes over 30 writing templates that are glued into the flipbook.
The Templates
The writing templates prompt students to write simple non-fiction facts, story writing, opinion writing, and more – just choose the ones that are just right for each student.
This project works well as an independent writing activity that students can be proud of! It’s perfect for whole class projects, and easy enough to add to your writing center.
Simple Instructions for Making Flap Books:
- Cut 1 piece of large construction paper in half lengthwise (standard 12X18″)
- Fold each piece into into thirds (6″ each) and glue the two pieces overlapping in the middle to make an X. (see picture)
- Fold all the flaps towards the center to close the book. (See video preview above to see how it looks!)
- Choose any of the differentiated writing templates to glue on the flaps. These include labeling, non-fiction facts, creative writing, and more!
- There is a full poster full of animal facts to use as reference, or use any books you have in class.
For a challenge, students can glue more templates on the back of each flap (adds 5 more writing tasks). There’s also a template for a cover, and an optional animal coloring art template (optional).

Differentiate By Complexity of Writing Task
Choose the writing templates that are appropriate for your students. There are some that only require simple drawing and labeling. Others require deeper thinking and more in-depth writing tasks. There are also generic pages for you to create a writing topic.
Reference Material for Animal Research
If you don’t have reference books on hand, that’s no problem. An animal fact poster is included for you to print and laminate for reference. Make a copy for each student, or projected onto a white board for students to refer to. The facts on the poster is numbered and written in simple sentences to support emergent writers.
To make the writing tasks more challenging, can use other reference books or internet searches to find more information for each template.
