Keep your students interested in writing this December with picture prompts! Picture prompts have been known to inspire and engage students. They also help eliminate issues with students who do not like to draw or have trouble coming up with original ideas for writing.

How can I use picture prompts with my students? These can be used in a variety of ways – find what works for you and your students. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pre-Print Journal: Choose your picture prompts ahead of time and print out the necessary pages for your students to use throughout the month.
  • Free Choice: Print a variety of prompts for students to self-select their writing paper.
  • Use the Special Holidays: There is a specific section at the end of the pack that coordinates with special holidays for the month. Use those on the indicated day (bottom left-hand corner) and let students self-select the rest of the month.
  • Early Finisher: If your school follows a specific writing plan, train your students on how to use this resource and utilize it as an early finisher activity.

How should I make the writing journals?

I suggest you copy every page with two sides – the picture prompt on the front side and a full lined page on the back. The blank writing paper is found after the journal cover in your download. You can choose to print your picture prompts with wide ruled paper or with handwriting lines.
