This is another simple, hands on center to practice phonics and spelling.
Just print, laminate and toss the word puzzle pieces in a bin, and you’re done!
There are several ways to differentiate. Here’s how it works in my classroom:
Level 1 – Students use letter sound knowledge to sound out simple words and then find the matching pictures.
Level 2 – Students complete level 1, then also find letters to build the word. The letter pieces will fit perfectly underneath, and will also match the color border.
Level 3 – Remove the word cards used as reference so students must choose a picture and find the letter cards to build that word.
Level 4 – Complete level 3’s task, and also write the words on the differentiated recording sheet, or write a sentence for each word.
Words puzzles are organized by color for each phonics rule or spelling pattern:
Short Vowel Words Set
Long Vowel Teams/Pairs Words Set
Long Vowels CVCE Words Set
Digraphs Words Set
Blends Words Set
R-Controlled Vowels Words Set
Diphthongs Words Set
If you wish to use different words, there is an editable set of cards included. It has a unique color from the rest of the sets, and includes puzzle templates for words that have 3, 4, 5 or 6 letters. The editable power point file is included in this download, along with the PDF file. There are two puzzles per page, but if you prefer the cards to be smaller for older students, or to save ink, then you can print two pages per paper.
