This is a comprehensive set of simple, familiar nursery rhyme poetry to practice several core literacy skills. These nursery rhyme poems practice:

-sight words

-rhyming

-writing with prompts

-sequencing

-word sorting

-printing

-comparing

-following directions

-comprehension

-creative writing response

Each poem has 10 No PREP printable activities which are repeated for each of the six poems to encourage mastery and independence.

Pocket chart words are included for each poem so you can print, cut and laminate for an instant pocket chart poetry center or as reference while students work through the activities.

Poems Used:

Twinkle Twinkle

Old Mother Hubbard

Buckle My Shoe

Little Miss Muffet

Star Light Star Bright

Humpty Dumpty

No Prep Activities and skills for each poem:

* Touch Reading: A copy of the poem for students to touch each word as they read to themselves or a partner.

*Comprehension: Students discuss the meaning of the poem and demonstrate comprehension by illustrating and writing about related topics and personal connections.

*Sequencing: Lines of the poem are mixed up and must be cut apart and glued back in order on another template page (included). Students are reminded not to glue until they have checked that the order is correct by reading it aloud.

*Tracing – Students practice correct letter formation by tracing the poem; also excellent differentiation for students not able to complete some of the other activities.

*Pocket Chart Poem: The entire poem is printed in large fonts to use in a pocket chart. It may also be used as a sequencing literacy center for collaborative small groups.

*Missing Words: Students use the words from the list to complete the missing words in the poem – letter boxes are used for extra support.

*Following Directions: Students use different colors to identify key aspects of spelling patterns and rhyming words in the poem.

*Writing templates: Opinion writing, comparing and contrasting, or personal response writing about a related topic.

I use this as a writing center activity. I was amazed how many of my students had never heard these nursery rhymes before!

Used as a supplement to reinforce a variety of skills including phonics. Students were engaged and felt ownership for each nursery rhyme they read. Great assessments and reinforcements.
