This resource lets your students practice phonics and letter sound knowledge in a fun and engaging way! Your students will LOVE this activity!
Students read the directions to draw and color a simple picture.
The sentences are simple: “Draw a ______. Color it _____.”
The details (blank lines in example above) are “coded” using pictures that represent each letter. Students must crack the code to see what to draw!
How do students crack the code?
Using letter sound knowledge!
For example, the directions may say “Draw a cat.”
The word “cat” will be represented by icons for each letter.
Once the word is decoded and printed, students draw it.
They must also decode what color to use!

For a writing extension, students can write a sentence about their picture at the bottom of the page.
These can be used for morning work, small group phonics lessons, literacy centers, or even home practice.
