This is a simple literacy center that is super popular in my classroom!
Students spin the wheel to make the letters line up to spell a word.
Then they spin the outer wheel to match the picture to the word they created.
PHONICS
There are five words on each wheel for the following letter patterns:
Words that start with:
CH SH PH WH TH
SW SK SN SM SP ST
BL CL FL GL SL
BR CR DR FR GR PR TR
Students can record words alone, or make sentences with each word. More advanced students can make funny poems or stories using all five words on the wheel.
SENTENCES
Once students have mastered these phonics words, they can move on to spinning sentences! There are three different wheels that can be made with interchangeable pieces. The inner wheel has the animal (subject), the middle wheel has the action (verb) and the outer wheel tells where things happen. There are so many sentence possibilities, and often the results are silly. Students love reading and sharing these to their peers!
WRITING
There are several different recording sheets for the silly sentences. There are also versions that include self-editing checklists so students can ensure that they’ve used the correct sentence structure.
