These spring vocabulary building crossword puzzles are engaging and fun! Designed to reinforce word meanings, these no-prep puzzles are perfect for challenging early elementary students or combining with independent research. Each puzzle contains ten thematic words, with simple definitions provided as clues. Keys are included, so you can allow students to check their work independently or have a handy reference for substitutes.
This resource includes ten puzzles, with spring themes such as Baseball, Rainy Day, Signs of Spring, Spring Activities, Spring Animals, Birds, Flowers, Gardens, Insects, and Spring Weather. If you have already purchased our Spring Word Searches, you’ll notice that the themes and words are the same – this is intentional, so students can get repeated practice in a different format. You can also use crosswords in small groups or with partners, and then assign word searches to be done independently. This way, students can be sure of definitions before using the words in sentences.
Crosswords are a versatile, print-and-go vocabulary activity that can be used in a variety of ways. Use them as a morning warm-up, an activity for early finishers, homework, indoor recess, a literacy center, or a writing vocabulary reference. They are also great for take-home spring break packets. With so many options, you’ll find the perfect way to fit these vocabulary boosters into your day.
Please note, some of these are more difficult than the winter crossword set because of including specific names of birds and flowers (see example in preview). This allows you to differentiate for those students needing a greater challenge. It also is a great opportunity to combine with independent research.
