Learning word families is fun! This strategy helps your students easily identify patterns in words and build confidence in their reading and writing. If your students are struggling with this concept or just need a little extra practice, then these ready-to-use worksheets are perfect for you – simply print and practice!

Which word families are covered?

Two-letter families: -ab, -ad, -ag, -am, -an, -ap, -at

Three-letter families:

-ack, -ail, -ain, -ake, -ale, -all, -ame, -ang, -ank, -ash, -ate, -ave

What will my students do with these worksheets?

The themes of the worksheets vary, but on each page, students will identify words that belong in each word family.

These pages look repetitive. Will they really help my students?

Yes! The pages are repetitive in appearance and format – only the focus family and words change from theme to theme. This works well for early learners, English language learners, and learners with special needs. Once students understand how to complete the page, they can successfully work on any other family you give them.

What are the six themes included in this resource?

The fun graphics on the worksheets include: bubbles, a dog with bones, balloons, a gumball machine, fish, and a candy jar.

When should I use this resource?

You can use these for morning work, tutoring, centers, small group instruction, or homework. Another great thing about these printables is you can introduce one worksheet format, such as Splish, Splash!, and then students can complete the similar pages for other families independently.

We’re limited on copies. Can I still use these?

Definitely! You can run a handful of copies, laminate them, and then place them in your literacy centers. Students can complete the pages with dry erase markers, check their work, and then wipe the sheets clean for the next set of students.
