This is an interactive, hands-on reading activity that can be used during whole class lessons, small group guided reading phonics lessons, or independent literacy centers. It’s also a great program to send home for practice with parents.

Students work through phonics spelling pattern cards with each set.
Set 2 focuses on word lists for blends, digraphs and word families spelling patterns.

There are two editable Powerpoint files included so you can create your own word lists!

I’ve been using this idea for over 20 years and it’s always a big hit – especially with reluctant readers. Students are prompted to read by isolating sounds using the large collection of differentiated word strips.

Here’s how it works:

1. Create the Reading Bugs holder, which is simply a long envelope with an open top to insert the word strips.

2. Students slowly pull the strip outwards to reveal and say each sound (or each word if using the sentence strips in set 3)

3. Included are little bug stickers for students to glue onto their reading certificates as they progress through the levels. The certificates are generic so that you can differentiate for your students and decide how much each student needs to complete their level.
